How long your order stays active, what day, GTC, IOC and FOK mean, and the special risks of trading before the open and after the close.

Every order has an expiration

When you place an order, you also choose how long it should stay active. This setting is called time in force. It matters most for orders that do not fill right away, such as limit orders and stops. Choosing the wrong one can leave you unprotected or, just as bad, holding an old order you forgot about.
