Tax Forms from Your Broker

Each year, brokers send tax forms that summarize your sales, dividends and interest. Here is what each form shows, when they arrive and how to check them. General education, not tax advice.

The main forms

FormWhat it reports
1099-BSales of stocks, funds and options, with proceeds and usually cost basis
1099-DIVDividends, including which are qualified, and fund capital gain distributions
1099-INTInterest from cash, bonds and Treasurys
1099-DASales of digital assets such as crypto through brokers
1099-RDistributions from retirement accounts

Brokers often combine these into one consolidated 1099.
