A real estate ETF holds dozens or hundreds of REITs in one fund. It is the simplest way to add property to a portfolio. Here is what they hold, what they cost and what to check before buying.

One fund, many REITs

Broad real estate ETFs, such as VNQ or XLRE, hold REITs across every property type. Instead of betting on warehouses or malls, you own the whole sector. Costs for the largest funds are low, often around 0.1% a year.
