Comparing Profitability Across Peers
A 5% margin can be excellent in one industry and terrible in another. The fair test is to compare a company with its direct competitors. Here is how to line up peers and what the differences tell you.
Pick true peers
Peers sell similar products to similar customers. Walmart, Costco and Target are peers. Walmart and Microsoft are not. Comparing across industries mostly tells you about the industries, not which company is better run.
