Buy-and-Hold vs. Active Trading

Should you buy and hold for decades, or trade actively? Here is what real data says about staying invested, what active managers achieve and how costs and taxes tilt the odds.

The case for buy-and-hold

In our price data, $10,000 in the S&P 500 fund SPY in March 2006 grew to about $58,000 by September 2026, before dividends, despite the 2008 crash, the 2020 pandemic drop and the 2022 bear market. Buy-and-hold investors captured all of that with minimal effort, low costs and few taxable sales.
